Why you shouldn’t call a newspaper computer repairman

Hi all! When a computer breaks down it is very sad. Even with basic skills and understanding of how a computer works, it is not always possible to solve the problem on your own. You can try a bunch of ways, but nothing will work, then you need the help of a specialist. What to do, where to run?

I do not recommend picking up a newspaper and calling the first ad you come across for private repairmen, or opening the Avito or Yulu bulletin board in search of service offers. In most cases, this is a “lure”; the ad contains a bunch of services at attractively low prices. What is hidden behind such proposals?

In any more or less large settlement, there are simply a lot of similar advertisements. In fact, computer repair is one of the most attractive and, at first glance, simple types of income. The guys who spent their entire childhood at the computer, reinstalled Windows “a hundred times”, assembled some assemblies, believe that they are ready to become full-fledged masters. They think they can fix any problem. They consider themselves self-sufficient, ready to solve problems in the field of repairs.

How to attract clients? Of course, you need to lure the client with low prices, preferably below market prices. They put up advertisements, copy the list of services from “seasoned” services, but they lower the prices. They start accepting applications and come to the client’s home. This is where the fun begins: if the client does not understand anything at all about computer technology, they simply impose a bunch of additional, completely unnecessary services on him. The price increases, from tempting in the advertisement to inadequately high. The client has no choice but to agree and pay. The computer needs to be fixed.

I am also self-taught, I have a legal education, I worked in my specialty for 5 years. After my dismissal, I decided to start repairing computers. Although I had an idea about all this, since as a child I spent a lot of time on the computer, I also reinstalled Windows, I could put together an assembly, replace something, and the like. But my approach was different, I opened a point where I accepted equipment from clients for repair. I took computers to my friends, they repaired them, billed me for their services, and I added my amount on top. Somehow it worked for some time. I studied, observed, tried my hand at repairs and learned in a year. Little by little, I moved away from the services of third-party craftsmen and began to fix everything myself. During my independent training, there were situations when I rendered equipment unusable. I did all the “experiments” using my own components, and I did not cause any damage to clients. When I came across something difficult, I took it to other craftsmen and did it myself.

After that, I promoted the outlet, opened another one, hired other craftsmen, and now I repair something as a hobby. I fell in love with this activity, but I no longer earn money with my own hands. During my work, a lot of clients came to me who had previously contacted me through advertisements for a technician to come out. After such repairs and the amounts they paid, I was often amazed. It would be better if such “masters” did not touch computers; after them, fixing something is much more difficult. Now most clients come to my workshops based on recommendations.

My opinion is that the “masters” who come to your home do not have the necessary skills, and their goal is only to make money, and not to solve the client’s problem. They learn how to repair on clients’ equipment; if they make a mistake, they will simply blame it on a malfunction that can only be “cured” by replacing some component. For example, buying a new motherboard is the most common cause of failure. Or they will even offer to buy an assembly from them that is “more powerful and better” than the old client one, and they will offer to buy the “broken” computer for a few pennies for spare parts.

Most real craftsmen do not go to clients’ homes, but work in their own workshop. Their prices may be higher than market prices, but they really solve the problem. If your computer breaks down, look for someone to contact only by recommendation. Contact trusted technicians or service centers. Spend some money on delivery of your computer to the workshop if you don’t have your own car, for example. In the workshop, they will carry out diagnostics in front of you, identify problems and fix them.

I agree that not everyone can be strictly defined as one category or another, good or bad masters. There are dishonest services and technicians, and there is a lot of deception everywhere. There are also “good” guys who know their business and go to your address to repair computers. Although I don’t know such people, I have transported equipment to all worthy masters, but this does not mean that they do not exist. It’s just that the percentage of worthy masters is extremely small. Take your time, call your friends and acquaintances, ask them to recommend a good and trusted workshop. As a result, you will solve your problem and spend less money than it would seem based on the prices of newspaper advertisements or bulletin boards. Now there is an additional opportunity to read reviews about a particular service or specialist. This is also important.

Thank you all for your attention. All the best and may your computer never break down. Subscribe to the channel , I will be grateful for “like” the article. Write in the comments about your experience of working with service centers or private craftsmen.
