Hi all! Today I’ll tell you how I repaired a Toshiba L850 laptop with a typical video chip malfunction, and how much money I spent. This device is worth attention, since it has an i7-3630QM processor installed on board. I’ll say right away that the renovation is expensive, but I think it’s worth it.

The exact laptop model is Toshiba L850-D7W. For almost all models in this series, the main problem is a faulty video chip. It will not be possible to carry out any warm-ups; transfer to UMA is the same. There are two options: modular replacement of the motherboard or finding a qualified technician with an IR station who can perform the necessary repairs. This laptop is no exception, the problem is the same. I decided to order a motherboard on AliExpress; the price was about 80. But before ordering, I decided to additionally search on Avito to see if anyone was selling such a scarf. I was lucky, I found an offer in my city for 6,000 rubles. This option turned out to be more attractive. You can connect it on site, test it, and only then pay. There are more risks on AliExpress, but I also have experience ordering motherboards from there, workers came all the time. But someday something faulty may arrive, you will have to open disputes and all that.

I came to the seller of the motherboard, everything was connected and checked. We even launched several tests. Everything was fine and I paid, gave the faulty motherboard for testing, for which I received a 500 ruble discount.

I installed everything in the laptop case, and additionally carried out a small upgrade with the installation of a 120 GB SSD. at the location where the optical drive is installed. For this I used special slides (thickness 9.5 mm). I installed Windows 10, drivers and other software on the SSD. I left the old HDD as a second one for storing large amounts of information and files.

I had to glue it a little with black electrical tape, since the slides didn’t hold very tightly, and there wasn’t anything special to attach them to. It turned out fine, nothing crashes or turns off. As a result, the laptop received a second life. I don’t know how long it will last, but I think with careful use and scheduled maintenance it will be a long period

The laptop is definitely worth the money invested in it; its hardware will be able to delight you with its performance and speed for many years to come. The laptop is not suitable for toys, only for old ones, up to 2015-2016, approximately. But for office work, surfing the Internet, a multimedia center, work and study, it’s an excellent option.
