Is a simple “skinny” boxed cooler enough to cool an Intel Core i5-9400F processor?

I installed this cooler to cool the processor of my home computer. Twice in a year I already cleaned it from dust, but it’s here again. I installed this cooler to cool the processor of my home computer.

Hi all! The issue of selecting a cooling system for the processor is a very important point when assembling a computer. Now there are a huge number of different options, differing in price, characteristics and efficiency. I’ll tell you with my example what I chose, let’s see the operating temperatures in tests and how everything functions after a year of operation.

I have a simple budget build at home with an Intel Core i5-9400F processor. I have been actively using it for a year. When I purchased components for assembly, I bought the simplest original boxed cooler from Intel with a copper core. He didn’t look credible, but the decision was made. During assembly I used Arctic Cooling MX-4 thermal paste. There were doubts about the correctness of this purchase, but I thought it should be enough as a temporary solution. So a year passed, and the temporary solution remained permanent.

I decided to run the AIDA64 test, load the processor to its fullest and see what happens to the temperatures. Let me remind you that a year of active operation of this system has passed. I have already carried out preventive maintenance, namely cleaning from dust, twice in a year. Let’s look at the results.

First, I’m attaching information about temperatures during “idle” conditions; we won’t count two open browsers with many tabs. And we run a system stability test via AIDA64.

Idle temperatures The test has not started yet Idle temperatures

The first “screen” is after two minutes of testing, the second after 10 minutes. Let’s take a look and draw conclusions.

The test is carried out for more than 2 minutes The test is carried out for more than 2 minutes The test is carried out for more than 10 minutes The test is carried out for more than 10 minutes

As can be seen from the tests, the cooling system copes perfectly. There are no critical operating temperatures observed. The cooler itself did not make any noise; it worked, as usual, very quietly. The TDP of this processor is 65 W, and the maximum temperature is 100 degrees; I don’t see any point in changing the cooling system to a more efficient one. Just a waste of time. If I decide to replace the processor, I will return to this issue. There is also no point in updating the thermal paste; let’s leave everything as it is for a while longer. We will only carry out preventive maintenance and dust cleaning. Thank you all for your attention, subscribe to the channel so as not to miss new channel publications.
