“The main thing is not to skimp on thermal paste and cover everything up” – eliminated other people’s mistakes in a laptop

Laptop, which will be the subject of consideration in the article Laptop, which will be the subject of consideration in the article

Hi all! The title of the article is, in all likelihood, the main slogan of a person who decided to service an old laptop. I’ll show you and tell you what I saw when I opened the laptop, which got very hot during operation.

I received an old Acer Aspire 5670 series ZB1 laptop. I looked at the temperatures according to AIDA 64, saw 70+ without load, after 5 minutes of work. The first thing I thought was that the cooling system was clogged with dust, as usual, a trivial problem. I’m very lucky that the laptop is very easy to disassemble. To get to the cooling system, you need to unscrew several screws and remove the cover. Full access to the cooling system is provided.

I visually inspected the fan, which was relatively clean; apparently mechanical cleaning had been carried out not long ago. I noticed traces of thermal paste leaking from under the cooling radiator. I decided to unscrew everything, disassemble the fan itself, suddenly something was not visible without disassembling, and at the same time remove any paste smudges or replace it. Based on the white color of the paste, I thought it was KPT-8, which is not advisable to use for servicing laptops.

I removed the cooling system and saw a picture painted with thermal paste. The person who changed it did not spare the paste and decided to cover everything up. I even painted the entire processor white. This picture made me very happy. I even covered up the thermal pads, apparently to “cool” everything for sure.

I had to completely clean everything and replace the thermal pads. I took the fan apart, but found virtually no dust. I applied the thermal paste with GD 900, using an insanely small amount. I did not apply the paste where the gaskets should be. I think it is a mistake to apply thermal paste to thermal pads. If I’m wrong, write in the comments why.

I put everything back together. The laptop started working noticeably quieter, stopped heating as before, and reached temperatures of 50+. Of course, this is not ideal, but considering the age of the laptop, I think it’s a good result. In general, a good laptop, with its ancient configuration: 2 gigabytes of DDR2-667 RAM and a dual-core Intel Core Duo T2400 processor (1833 MHz), an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 video adapter (256 mb). According to the video, if I’m not mistaken, another 256 MB of RAM is a plus. YouTube in 720 quality, plays very calmly without slowing down. Runs on Windows 7 x86.

After correctly replacing the thermal paste, we got the following results. But here are the main characteristics of the laptop. We watch YouTube without problems on this laptop. After correctly replacing the thermal paste, we got the following results.

Guys, who doesn’t know how to apply thermal paste correctly, here’s an article on my channel. This pasta replacement that I discovered will only make things worse.
